World first in cure for gum disease

A WORLD-FIRST cure for gum disease that affects almost one in three Australian adults is a step closer, after a Melbourne research team signed a development deal with drug companies CSL and Sanofi Pasteur.

RESEARCHERS at Melbourne University plan to test a vaccine that promises to prevent people's teeth from falling out. Six years of investigations by the university's school of dental science have identified Porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacterium that causes the gum disease, adult periodontitis.
